While statistical models like the Global Slavery Index estimate that around 1.1 million people live in modern slavery across the United States, the hidden nature of the crime means only a fraction are ever documented. Every year, the National Human Trafficking Hotline receives reports on about 10,000 to 12,000 potential cases—representing roughly 20,000 victims—while legal channels yield only 1,500 to 2,500 law enforcement prosecutions. This huge disparity highlights how human trafficking remains largely underground, with identified cases representing just the visible tip of a much larger iceberg.
